The Witchery by the Castle
        Indulgent Gothic romance (l,d; £££)

Tucked away down an old Royal Mile close, by a spot where James VI burnt hundreds of women for witchery, lies this exceptionally smart restaurant and small hotel (9 rooms).
Both are decorated to the style of an indulgent Gothic fantasy – candlesticks, red leather seats, tapestries, mirrors and carvings; the works! All this helps make give it a reputation as one of the most romantic spots to eat or stay in Edinburgh.
The food served features the best of Scotland's produce – Angus beef, lamb, game and seafood – and the finest of French wines. Save money on set meals by dining between noon–5.30pm or after 10.30pm.
