Beaumont-du-Périgord

King Edward's Bastide in the Périgord Pourpre

Beaumont

Dating from 1272 this Bastide was built on behalf of King Edward I of England and several traces of the walls and the Porte de Luzier can be still be seen.

The massive fortified Église St-Front was built at the same time as a place where the inhabitants could shelter should the outer defences be breached. One of the towers is really a crenellated keep while the other is a simple bell-tower.

In the vicinity of Beaumont there is much to see including the Dolmen de Blanc and the nearby Château de Bannes. A little further north on the D660 the Ecomusée du Papier is housed in the Moulin de la Rouzique at Couze-et-St-Front. The Moulin de Larraque, on the same site, still makes filigreed paper.

Finally, while you are in the Purple Périgord, the vast former Benedictine Abbey at St-Avit-Sénieur is worth visiting and don’t miss Cadouin and Monpazier which are both featured in this app.

Market day: Tuesday and Saturday
