Totnes

History-rich eco town

Totnes

Historic Totnes is easily Devon’s most alternative town. The main streets are full of ethical producers, independent shops and vegan cafes. But you’ll also find an impressive castle and wealth of Tudor buildings among the yoga studios and vintage stores.

Overlooking Totnes town

The Castle

Built up around a key crossing of the River Dart, Totnes has been an important trading base since Saxon times.

The Normans stormed in in the 11th century and built Totnes Castle. A visit sees you climbing the keep, gazing down onto the town’s rooftops and strolling around in the former moat.

High Street

The Town

By the Tudor period Totnes was one of Devon’s richest towns – that legacy is the fine buildings lining High St, the Butterwalk and Poultry Walk.
