Charlestown

Heritage harbour turned film set

Charlestown

If Charlestown’s historic quays look familiar, that’s because they’ve stared in many films & TV shows. The port is also home to heritage ships and an enjoyable shipwreck museum.

Crews from Dr Who and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland are among those who’ve set the cameras rolling at Charlestown. But the port has most notably featured in the BBC’s recent Poldark series, staring Aiden Turner.

Charlestown’s long, slender Georgian harbour was built for ships transporting copper from local mines. Construction started in the 1790s and by 1910 it was an important port in Cornwall’s China clay trade.

Historic Ships

Today Charlestown is home to historic vessels including the 1930s topsail schooner, Anny of Charlestown; the 1921 Looe Lugger I.R.I.S and the 1902 Looe lifeboat Ryder.
