Beaches

Devon and Cornwall’s beaches are as captivating as they are diverse. Prepare to discover vast sweeps of sand, surfing and water sports hotspots, family-friendly bays and classic resorts.

Surf

The north coasts – Cornwall in particular – get some of Britain’s best rideable waves. This brings a hip vibe and plenty of surf schools and wetsuit hire outlets. Elsewhere you’re likely to be able to rent sit-on-top kayaks and paddleboards.

Seasons

Devon and Cornwall’s beach life peaks between Easter and early-September – cafes and kit hire shops are open for longer then. Some facilities close in the winter, others focus on weekends.

Safety

The region’s seas also pose dangers. Many beaches – especially ones popular with surfers – can also have very strong currents. Check

  • rnli.org for lifeguard cover (usually seasonal)
  • bbc.co.uk for the latest tide times.
