Game of Thrones

Fort Lovrijenac, Dubrovnik, Croatia

Croatia was one of the key locations for HBO series Game of Thrones, especially in Dubrovnik & Around, where memories of the series have become an important plank of the local tourist industry.

Dubrovnik played the part of King’s Landing, its walls and towers clearly recognizable even though the skyline was added to by the special effects department. Several of the town’s landmarks, notably Lovrijenac Fortress (The Red Keep) and the Minčeta Tower on Dubrovnik City Walls (The House of the Undying) played specific roles in the story.

Outdoor garden scenes were shot at both the Trsteno Arboretum just outside Dubrovnik, and in the former monastery gardens of Lokrum Island.

Diocletian’s Palace Basement in Split was used as Daenerys’s throne room in the city of Meereen; while the siege of Meereen was enacted in front of the fortress of Klis, just inland from Split.
