Split Archeological Museum

2000-years ago preserved

Many of the relics found in Diocletian’s Palace and nearby Salona ended up in Split’s Archeological Museum. An enthralling collection of household objects, jewellery and sculpture goes some way to conjuring an image of daily life as it was lived just under 2000 years ago.

Sarcophagi

Particularly spectacular are the ornate sarcophagi lugged here from Salona and currently displayed in the museum’s cloistered grounds. Many are decorated with vivid reliefs depicting mythological subjects - as is the case of the second-century casket decorated with scenes from the Calydonian Boar Hunt - or early Christian themes, such as the fourth-century sarcophagus known as the Good Shepherd.
