Karneval

Croatian carnival (Feb/Mar)

As in other Mediterranean countries the run-up to Lent is marked by a feating, dressing up and parades, with carnival participants frequently making satirical comment on the social and political events of the previous year.

The biggest party of the lot is in the port city of Rijeka, with its massive parade and city-wide after-party. Carnival is also celebrated with gusto in the towns of [Samobor] and [Velika Gorica] near Zagreb, and on the coast in [Split] and [Dubrovnik].
