Whale Watching from land

Rarotonga: July to October

Humpback_3

The 2.2 million sq km of ocean surrounding the Cook Islands is a huge whale sanctuary, visited from July to October by numerous humpback whales.

The whales come within a few hundred metres of shore on the northwest and north coasts of Rarotonga (where the reef is closest to shore) and can often be seen from bars and restaurants built along Avarua’s waterfront.

Black Rock (this entry’s map location) and the western end of the airport runway are also good viewing spots where the fringing reef is closest to shore.
