Bay Gardens (Oistins)

fish fry stalls (l,d; $)

Oistins Friday Night Fish Fry centres on the Bay Gardens (above) a collection of informal fish-fry stalls offering similar fare – fresh catch straight from the fish market next door, accompanied by a range of traditional sides, such as macaroni pie, plantain and breadfruit. It’s all very casual – communal eating (sometimes) off paper plates on long picnic tables with plastic chairs.

The air reverberates with a cacophony of competing live music, karaoke, and soca, usually blasting from giant speakers outside the rum shops and slot-machine bars over the road. Waiting times in high season can be long. All in all, people either love it or loathe it. For a less frenetic experience, with a much shorter wait-time, roll up midweek. Many stalls open at lunchtime too.

Popular stalls include Pat’s Place, Uncle George’s and Fred’s Bar.
