Banks and ATMs

Getting & spending money

Getting money

Banks and ATMs only dispense Barbados Dollars. The currency comprises six notes (for 100, 50, 20, 10, 5 and 2 dollars) and four coins (for a dollar, 25, 10 and five cents). Banks and ATMs accept the major credit cards and some also give cash on debit cards. Some ATMs charge for use.

The biggest concentration of banking and ATM services are in Bridgetown, but banks and 24hr-ATM services are sprinkled across the island (but not on the East Coast) in Holetown, Speightstown, Warrens and Oistins, as well as in several shopping centres.

Banking hours are variable, depending on the bank and the branch, generally Mon–Fri 8 or 9am to 3–5pm. Banks are closed at weekends.

Spending money

Almost all accommodation and tours are charged in US Dollars, which can be paid for by credit card. Most restaurants, bars, supermarkets and shops also take credit card payments although prices are given, and usually paid for, in Barbados Dollars. Small cafés, informal restaurants and buses, for example, will want to be paid in cash, in Barbados Dollars, and preferably using small change.
