Hôntô

Next-gen Japanese (d; $$$)

Hôntô, Brisbane

Despite its clandestine setting – behind a nondescript door, down a dead-end alley – Hôntô is Brisbane’s worst kept secret. Why? Spectacular, Japanese-inspired dishes bursting with flavour and creativity: think ridiculously fresh kingfish sashimi paired with mandarin ponzu, strawberry, scud chilli and shiso, or 24-hour beef short rib funked up with black garlic and pickled cucumber. Cult-status bites include an addictive lobster katsu sando.

Just off the main dining room is brooding ÔÔ Bar, perfect for swilling niche Japanese sakes, whiskeys or a clever cocktail.

Bookings recommended.
