Kakadu National Park

World Heritage wilderness

Ubirr sunset Kakadu

Australia’s largest national park is simply breathtaking. Spanning almost 20,000-square-kilometres of the Northern Territory’s ‘Top End’, its sweeping wetlands, cinematic skies and mythical rock art get deep under your skin.

Opportunities for exploration are endless: hiking, 4WD expeditions, boat and cultural tours, swimming. This is the land of the Bininj/Mungguy people and exceptional tour operators like Arnhemlander Cultural & Heritage 4WD Tour offer invaluable day tours that allow for deeper, more meaningful connections to Kakadu’s natural and cultural assets.

The best (albeit busiest) time to visit is during the Dry Season (June to September), when all businesses are open and sites accessible.

Kakadu National Park lies some 150km east of Darwin and some 1330km north of Alice Springs.

Car: The sealed Arnhem Hwy (SR36) connects Darwin to Kakadu National Park. From Alice Springs, head north on the Stuart Hwy (A1) and switch to Kakadu Hwy (SR21) in Pine Creek.

While many popular attractions at Kakadu can be accessed with a normal 2WD vehicle, a 4WD vehicle allows you to explore more corners of the park.

For current road conditions and closures, see parksaustralia.gov.au/kakadu/access.
