Australia’s other shoulder season brings flower festivals and the spectacular outback blooms of South Australia and Western Australia.

September and October are still ‘dry’ in the north, making them ideal months for exploration. Coastal holiday towns are busy during the two-week school spring break (mid-September to early October). Weather in the south begins to warm up, though sudden cold spells are not uncommon.

Canberra celebrates colourful blooms with ambitious flower show Floriade, running from early September to early October. Further north, September sees Brisbane leaps into spring with its arty, three-week Brisbane Festival.

Across in Western Australia, Margaret River, Swan Valley and Perth celebrate all things edible with November’s five-day Gourmet Escape, one of Australia’s finest epicurean festivals.
