Autumn: Mar, Apr & May

Autumn, Melbourne

Shoulder season is mild to warm and perfect for sightseeing. Much of mainland Australia remains warm to hot through March to mid-April, making a beach holidays still viable in southern Australia. Coastal towns are busy at Easter, so book accommodation well in advance. Autumn colours blaze in parts of the southeast, especially Victoria, ACT, Tasmania and southeast South Australia.

March blockbusters include South Australia’s Adelaide Festival and WOMADelaide, as well as the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival in Victoria.

April brings the mammoth Melbourne International Comedy Festival, while Melbourne’s multi-disciplinary arts celebration Rising Festival takes centre stage from late May to early June.

In even-numbered years, the Biennale of Sydney draws art lovers from mid-March to mid-June.
