Exarchia

Exarchia

Known as a hub for subculture, Exarchia is a real bipolar mix of alternative cultures–a turf for radicals and anarchists giving it a trendy vibe with many coffee shops, bookshops (due to its location to the Athens Technical University) and literary houses as well as some unique and traditional tavernas such as Rozallia and Taverna Peinaleon.

Geography

Built at the slopes of Mount Lycabettus and bleeding into the fashionable district of Kolonaki, Exarchia is near the National Archeological Museum and the National Technical University.

National Archaeological Museum of Greece

This helps to give explanation to Exarchia’s chequered past, and present, reputation of being the starting point for whenever a riot kicks off. This was certainly the case back in early 2000’s, when the financial crisis took hold of the country.
