Bar Convent

Caring for body as well as soul

Founded in the 17th century as a school for girls, this small religious community now claims to be England's oldest working convent.

It features a hidden chapel, open to visitors, and includes a exhibition of the history of Roman Catholic church in Britain, especially York. The Bar Convent attempts to provide a welcome which caters for both body as well as soul of its visitors. It also has a pleasant café and cakes, as well as a well-rated bed and breakfast guest house.

The main doors open onto a welcoming, airy Victorian tiled public area. This leads to a thriving conference centre, the daytime self-service café and the accommodation for visitors.

TIME Allow 1 hour

TIP Off the tourist trail, just beyond Micklegate Bar & Museum and only five minutes from the station, this is a reliable place for breakfast, a freshly-made snack or meal (with tables in the garden in summer). Visited mainly by locals in the know.
