Roscón de Reyes
Three Kings brioche
A seasonal treat whose origins may date back to the Roman winter festival of Saturnalia but whose current form is far more recent.
Shaped to imitate the crown worn by the three wise men and covered in glacé fruit, the roscón de Reyes is a brioche-like cake traditionally eaten at Reyes (Epiphany) on January 6th, but consumed throughout the Christmas period.
Inside is a bean, or more frequently, a small ceramic figure and, depending on the local tradition, whoever finds it in their slice is brought good luck, or has to pay for or make the next roscón.
Modern versions of the roscón are often filled with cream, custard cream or chocolate.
