Orujo
Pomace brandy
A powerful spirit - also known as “aguardiente” (literally ”firewater”) - distilled from the residue of grapes following pressing. Orujo is produced mainly in the north of Spain, in particular the Atlantic region of Galicia.
Orujo is clear but there are a host of flavoured variations including orujo de hierbas (made with aromatic herbs such as mint, bay leaf, basil, rosemary and sage) and crema de orujo (a cream liqueur made with cream, sugar and often including caramel, coffee and cocoa).
Usually offered after a meal because of its alleged digestive properties.
