La Tomatina, Buñol

Frenzied food fight fiesta

Probably the biggest and most eye-catching food fight of all time. Some 30,000 revellers from far and wide converge on the anonymous Valencian outpost of Buñol on the last Wednesday of August literally to paint the town red and indulge themselves in their infant fantasies.

The action takes place in the Plaza del Pueblo and the carnage lasts for around an hour before the town is hosed down and returns to its non-descript normality.

In the evening, paella accompanied by Agua de Valencia (a cava and orange juice cocktail) will soothe any tomato-inflicted wounds.
