Vegetarians & Vegans

Advice for non-meat eaters

Spinach catalan-style

Despite the fantastic range of fresh produce available in shops and markets, it has traditionally been a real challenge to be a vegetarian in Spain.

Things are changing, however, and where once waiters would look at you in disbelief if you said you did not eat meat or fish they are now ready to run through the vegetarian options, though do watch out for places that throw in some bits of ham into almost vegetable dish.

Life is more difficult for vegans but - in the bigger cities at least - there are a smattering of vegan-friendly restaurants. Markets and food stores have a fantastic range of fruit, veg and pulses, so are often the best option.
