Cannes and Around

The glittering resort of Cannes is located about 34km/21mi to the west of Nice. This exciting city on the Golfe de Napoule is quite different, maybe a little more brash than its neighbour and great rival, and is certainly well worth a visit if only to take in the luxurious harbour and the fabulous Croisette.

Le Suquet

History

Although there had been a Roman settlement here Cannes was established as a fishing village below Le Suquet on Mont Chevalier in early Medieval times. Named Canoïs due to the profusion of reeds in the marshes surrounding the village it remained a backwater until it was discovered in 1834 by Lord Brougham (pronounced Broom), the Lord Chancellor of England who was on his way to Nice.
