Route du Baroque

Baroque Architecture in Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes

The Baroque Route in Nice Beyond consists of a number of towns and villages which have examples of Baroque architecture. Usually these take the form of churches but also paintings and sculpture, scattered throughout the region. The route also extends into Liguria (not covered here).

What is Baroque?

Historians use the term Baroque to describe the flamboyant, curvacious and theatrical style of architecture and music introduced during the Counter-Reformation. This swept through Europe during the 16th Century in an attempt to win back support for the Catholic Faith.

Where to find the Baroque

Check out: Nice Cathédrale, Villefranche-sur-Mer, La Turbie, Roquebrune, Menton, Sospel, Breil-sur-Roya, Utelle, Lantosque, St-Martin-Vésubie, Belvédère, Saorge an d Tende.

There is no need to follow the whole route in one go! Ensure you have the Michelin Local 341 map and perhaps explore a few locations at a time.
