Monasterio Santa Teresa
Catalina without crowds
The full name of this small convent is Monasterio de Carmelitas Descalzas de San José y Santa Teresa. It’s very different from the touristy Santa Catalina, smaller and more austere.
Even if you’re not into church history, this is an excellent place to learn about traditional art techniques used in painting and sculpture in Arequipa. The sculpture above is shown in stages: the light woody interior of cactus is used to fashion a body while the cactus thorns are used in place of nails to hold it together, below.
There is also an exhibit on the use of gold leaf. Arequipa’s mines have produced a lot of gold over the centuries and every church and museum is full of gilded frames and art.
The art collection is impressive but the gardens are also lovely, full of plum and pomegranate trees and lots of flowers.
