San Camilo is Arequipa’s biggest central market and a great place to buy souvenirs and see the wide variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables. In the fruit section look for a local variety of small yellow papayas, the size of a mango.

This is also a great place to get a fresh fruit smoothie or juice. It’s served in a large glass and when you’ve finished give the glass back to get the other half - they always serve you a whole blender full of juice.

If you don’t have time for a picantería like La Ocopa, walk through the food section where you can see people eating traditional Arequipeñian breakfast and lunch dishes. One not to miss is rocoto relleno con pastel, a spicy stuffed pepper served with scalloped potatoes, above.
