Mountaineering Agencies

High in the Andes

Huascaran and Chopicalqui Mountains Huaraz

Mountaineering in Peru is often in the Cordillera Blanca, the volcanos of Arequipa or technical areas of Ausangate.

You can find experienced local guiding agencies for all of these in the towns of Huaraz, Arequipa or Cusco.

Training and licensing for mountain trekking guides (guía de montaña) and mountaineering guides (guía de montañismo) is different. Only mountaineering guides are properly trained for hiking on or near glaciers, using climbing gear like harnesses and ropes, and search and rescue in glacial areas.

If you are doing anything more than hiking on trails, hire a mountaineering guide. They’re more expensive because of their extensive training, and absolutely worth it because of their safety skills.

Always check the licensing of both the agency and the individual guide who will be accompanying you. If you are renting gear, inspect it carefully.
