Alpaca wool

What’s baby alpaca wool?

Baby alpaca Ausangate

Just like a human baby’s first hair is usually softer than adult hair, baby alpaca wool is much softer than adult alpaca wool. For the wool to qualify as “baby alpaca” it must be the first shearing of that alpaca.

The extraordinary softness of baby alpaca wool puts it in much higher demand and also makes it much more expensive. Adult alpaca wool is also great for blankets and jackets, so don’t shy away if it’s not 100% baby alpaca. All alpaca wool is extraordinarily warm and soft.

You can learn more about alpaca wool at Awana Kancha. You’ll get to see alpacas and llamas up close and if you’re lucky you can see their vicuñas and guanacos that roam wild in the hills above the property.
