Jungle Diseases

Health in the Amazon

The Peruvian Amazon is an amazing place with an incredible diversity of flora and fauna. However, there are some special health considerations for those who want to see the Amazon rainforest.

Visit a travel clinic at home before you travel to Peru. Malaria, Dengue and Yellow Fever are all present in the Peruvian Amazon. Be sure to research the area that you are planning to go, since not all of Peru carries the risk of these three diseases.

Fun fact about malaria in Peru: The Quina tree used to make quinine, the first drug used to fight malaria, is native to Peru. Indigenous people used it long before they shared the knowledge with European colonizers. The tree is actually on the Peruvian national flag and seal.
