Danseys Pass Road

For the truly adventurous

If you’re after a top Kiwi adventure, drive over the Danseys Pass Rd that links North Otago and Naseby in Central Otago on an unsealed gravel road through and over the Kakanui mountains.

While you don’t necessarily need a 4WD, the road is remote, hits an elevation high of 935m, and is not a place to break down or slide off the road through lack of concentration. Check road conditions before you go. Expect snow and ice in winter.

A highlight is a stop at the Danseys Pass Hotel, an historic 1862 pub on the Central Otago side of the pass that offers both refreshments and accommodation.
