Kapiti Coast

The Kapiti Coast

The slither of land up the west coast to the north of Wellington is known as the Kapiti Coast, named after offshore eco-Kapiti Island. Wellington’s Kapiti train line runs up the coast to Waikanae, with commuter trains making the trip into the capital with regularity.

Inland forested hills keep the tracks and SH1 close to the sea for much of the trip, passing through the Kapiti communities such as Paekakariki, Paraparaumu and Waikanae. It’s a pleasant drive with long, uncrowded beaches that are popular in summer.
