Mt Taranaki & Egmont NP

Hiking on & around this perfect volcanic cone

Carrington St

From wherever you’re looking, it’s hard not to stare at Mt Taranaki with its perfect 2518m volcanic cone – one that’s apparently overdue for a decent eruption.

If you’re not content with just looking, there are a number of great walking options including climbing to the summit, though you’ll want to do your homework, be fit, experienced and well equipped to take it on. Allow 8-10hrs for the up-and-down hike and visit Egmont National Park Visitor Centre before you start out. Weather conditions on the exposed volcano can change very quickly.

Other options include the 25km, 2-3 day Pouakai Circuit, plus there a number of excellent north and east Egmont short walks.
