Ninety Mile Beach

Drive on an endless strip of sand

0343 - Neuseeland 2017 - Ninety Mile Beach

This fabled continuous strip of beach is actually 88km long (not 90 miles) and stretches from Ahipara to Scott Point, 5km south of Cape Maria van Diemen on the west coast of the Far North.

Officially a highway, the beach is really only suitable for 4WD vehicles at specific times of the tides. Rental companies won’t allow their cars on the sand, so the easiest way to drive along the beach is to catch a tour with Sand Safaris.

At the northern end, you’ll find Te Paki Giant Sand Dunes, known for ‘sand boarding’ on the massive dunes. Use of ‘sand boards’ is included as part of the Sand Safaris tour.
