With a population of 47,000, Nelson is the biggest city in the region and has the enviable reputation as being the sunniest and one of the most liveable cities in New Zealand. Kahurangi, Nelson Lakes and Abel Tasman national parks are all within easy reach of town, making Nelson a great base for exploring the north of the South Island.
