Mt John

Stars & views

Mt John Observatory

Views from atop Mt John of the surrounding mountains and lakes during daylight hours are outstanding, only topped by stargazing opportunities from the University of Canterbury’s Mt John Observatory after dark.

During the day, walk up on the Mt John Summit Track (1hr) or drive up from Lake Tekapo Village in 15mins ($8 road toll). There’s the Astro Cafe, those views and the Summit Circuit Track (30-45mins) for a pleasant amble.

At night, come up on a tour with Dark Sky Project to look at the stars.
