Ulva Island (Te Wharawhara)

Predator-free paradise for birds

New Zealand Robin

Only a 10-minute boat ride from Golden Bay Wharf, Ulva Island / Te Wharawhara is a predator-free bird sanctuary bristling with birdsong.

There are a number of tracks from Post Office Bay, where visitors are dropped off. Keep your eye out for tieke (South Island Saddlebacks), which have been released on the island.

Hop on a Rakiura Charters taxi-boat ($25 return) and pick up an Ulva: Self-Guided Tour pamphlet at the Post Office Bay jetty. Or better yet, learn it all with Ulva’s Guided Walks.
