Doubtful Sound / Patea

Spectacular Fiordland scenery

On Doubtful Sound.NZ

The only two fiords in Fiordland that are readily accessible to visitors are Milford and Doubtful Sounds - and the huge majority go to Milford as it is accessible by road.

This means that if you want to see fewer people – and who doesn’t – head to Doubtful Sound. You’re going to need to hop on boat at Manapouri township, cross Lake Manapouri, change to a bus that will take you over the Wilmot Pass and down into Doubtful Sound - where, depending on what you’ve booked, you’ll be on a day cruise or an overnight cruise. It’s all part of a package, so check the website and weigh up your options.

Doubtful Sound got it’s name as, in 1770, Captain James Cook was doubtful that he’d be able to get back out if he sailed into it.
