Moeraki Boulders
Perfectly rounded boulders on the beach

These unusually large, spherical boulders lie along a stretch of Koekohe Beach between Moeraki and Hampden, and have become a visitor magnet for those driving by.
While Māori legends say they are the remains of eel baskets and calabashes washed ashore from the wreck of Arai-te-uru, a large sailing canoe, more out-there theories suggest they are the eggs of aliens getting ready to hatch.
