Bicycle

the tour group

New Zealand is a great country to see by bicycle. It’s relatively uncrowded, there is a good road system, plus there are well-established off-road bicycle trails all over the country.

Ngā Haerenga New Zealand Cycle Trails has a network of 23 Great Rides throughout the country for those interested in seeing New Zealand by bicycle. Use their routes and maps to tour the length and breadth of the country.

Check out Tour Aotearoa if you’re keen on a 3000km length-of-NZ bikepacking trip.

There is also good advice at Cycle Touring in New Zealand.

Mountain biking is extremely popular, and electric bikes are everywhere, as well as regular bikes.

Many people cycle to work, especially in Auckland and Christchurch, where you’ll find dedicated bike lanes.

Most towns have at least one rental bicycle outlet.

By law, you must wear a helmet when riding a bike.

See Cycling in Interests & Activities for information on recreational cycling such as mountain biking and off-road biking.
