Martha’s Vineyard
Seaside summer charm
In 1602, English explorer Bartholomew Gosnold was so impressed with the abundance of wild fox grapes growing that he called this pretty island a vineyard.
With 120 miles of coastline and six beach towns, Martha’s Vineyard is a New England paradise four miles off Cape Cod. As for the “Martha” part — that’s the name of Gosnold’s daughter, as well as the mother-in-law who paid for the expedition.
Meander to check out lighthouses or stay late on a secluded beach to catch a pink sunset. About 1/3 of the island is protected land and ranges from oceanside cliffs to rolling farmland.
