Dar Bellarj

Cultural centre - دار بلارج

Dar Bellarj is the home of a cultural foundation that puts on concerts and exhibitions, mostly free.

The name Dar Bellarj means “House of the Storks”; it stands on the site of an old foundouk that was once used as a bird hospital. The foundouk was demolished and replaced with the existing building in the 1930s. By the 1990s it had fallen into disrepair and was bought and done up by a couple of Swiss architects, who used it to set up a non-profit foundation to benefit the local community.

From a tourist point of view, Dar Bellarj isn’t massively interesting, but it’s right opposite the Ben Youssef Medersa, so you can pop in when you’re passing to see if there’s a good exhibition on.
