Bab Debbagh

The tanners’ gate - باب الدباغ

Bab Debbagh (inside)

Bab Debbagh, whose name means “Tanners’ Gate”, is the gate leading from outside the city into the tanners’ quarter, by the city's tanneries.

It isn't clear how old the existing gate is, but the design at any rate goes back to the time of the Almohads (twelfth century) and perhaps even the Almoravids (eleventh century), with a double chicane to hinder the path of any potential invaders.

Bab Debbagh (outside)

There's a staircase inside the gate leading up to the top (for views over the tanneries), but it isn't usually open to the public.
