Manga & Anime

Anime Magazines

Manga (comics) & Anime (short for ‘animation’) are, without doubt, two of Japan’s biggest cultural exports. They are so popular in Japan that according to a 2019 study, fully 1/3 of Japanese read manga or watch anime frequently.

Otaku (obsessed fans) are all over Japan, but especially prevalent in the Akihabara district of Tōkyō (Akiba for short), where you’ll find concept cafes, comics, cosplay and all things otaku.

Manga Cafes, where you can read manga for as long as you like, have even become a cheap form of accommodation.

When in Kyōto, head to the International Manga Museum, which has 300,000 manga in its collection!

Animate is the biggest retailer of manga, anime, and games in Japan, with well over 100 stores.
