Kurokawa Onsen 黒川温泉
Atmospheric riverside hot springs village
This lovely riverside hot springs town is a top place to stay for a night or two, with an atmospheric township and excellent outdoor baths (rotenburo), some of which are right besides the river.
The town centre, located in a forested valley, is compact and easily explored on foot. Unlike many other resorts (such as Beppu), expect minimal concrete - there’s a traditional look with attractive shops, cafes and public baths.
Do like the locals - stroll about town in your ryokan’s yukata and geta sandals.
Kurokawa Onsen is about 20km north of Mt Aso. A rental car would be really useful for exploring central Kyūshū.
