Ibusuki 指宿

Try a bit of sand-bathing?

David in sunglasses

Not many places in the world where you can pay to be buried in naturally heated sand! That’s Ibusuki’s claim to fame though.

While a number of hotels offer sand baths, head to Saraku Sand Bath Hall, where you can be buried for 10 to 20 minutes (the heat is regulated by how deep you’re buried!) on the beach by the sea, then wash off and relax in a regular onsen.

Ibusuki is in the south of the Satsuma Peninsula, about 50km soth of Kagoshima City. Combine a trip to Ibusuki with climbing nearby Kaimon-dake.
