Kurama - Kibune 鞍馬と貴船

Hike in the mountains north of Kyōto

Kurama

The two villages of Kurama and Kibune sit in neighbouring valleys about 30 minutes north of Kyoto by train and are linked by a lovely hiking trail that passes over the mountain between them, that is home to the Kurama-dera temple.

The Kurama to Kibune Hike is a popular retreat for locals wanting to escape the city. Allow 2-3 hours for the 4km walk, which can be hiked in either direction. Keep in mind that it’s not flat, starting in one valley, climbing up and over the forested mountain, then dropping into the next valley.
