Arashiyama 嵐山

Endless bamboo groves

Arashiyama bamboo forest

Chances are you’ve seen the image of Arashiyama’s famous bamboo (take) groves before coming to Kyōto. The groves are particularly attractive when there is a light wind, making the tall bamboo stalks sway. Bamboo from here has been used in the making of baskets, cups, boxes and mats at local workshops for centuries.

This isn’t all there is to Arashiyama, however. It’s a touristy area in western Kyōto, popular since the Heian Period (794-1185). Expect crowds during the cherry blossom and fall color seasons.

The Togetsukyo (Moon Crossing Bridge) is a 155m bridge built across the Katsura River that is popular with Japanese visitors as its a well-used filming location.

There are a number of preserved streets, museums, temples and shrines, shops and restaurants, plus the Sagano Scenic Railway and boat tours on the Hozu River.
