Philosopher’s Path 哲学の道

Pleasant 2km stone path stroll; a must-do

The Philosophers Walk is about 2km long and runs along a canal

A stroll along the Tetsugaku-no-michi (the Philosopher’s Path) is one of my favourite things to do in Kyōto.

It’s an extremely pleasant 2km walk linking the Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) and the Nanzen-ji Temple.

The path got its name thanks to the famous philosopher Nishida Kitaro, who it’s said used to practice meditation while walking this route on his daily commute to Kyōto University.

Expect a lovely canal-side stroll with restaurants, cafes, and boutiques, as well as a number of smaller temples and shrines.

At the path’s southern end, it’s a short walk on roads to the Eikandō Temple, a famous autumn colour spot, and on to the Nanzen-ji.
