Yamanobe-no-michi Trail 山辺の道

Fascinating ramble through rural Nara

Tenri

This highly recommended walk in Nara Prefecture is along the oldest road mentioned in Japanese records.

While the full trail is much longer, these days the most popular section is 11km long, connecting Isonokami Shrine near Tenri Station with Omiwa Shrine near Miwa Station.

It’s a lovely ramble through the countryside that connects shrines, temples, 1400-year-old Emperor’s tombs, farming villages, persimmon orchards and rice paddies. There’s a rich rural aroma and a feel that you’ve found a different and enthralling side of Japan.

The route is well signposted in English, reasonably flat and has a few spots where you can take refreshment breaks. Start at Tenri Station and pick up an English map.

The Yamanobe-no-michi Trail makes for an easy day trip from Osaka, Kyoto or Nara.
