Izu Peninsula 伊豆半島

Beaches & seaside hot springs

izu_20171222161556

About 100km southwest of Tōkyō, the Izu-hantō is a popular weekend getaway from the capital.

The more developed eastern coast has:

  • the town of Atami, with a shinkansen station, a small beach and onsen hotels.
  • the attractive hot springs town of Ito.
  • the southern city of Shimoda, known for its onsen, beaches & surfing.

The southern and western coasts are less developed and better known for their rugged coastlines, especially at the southern point of Cape Irozaki and Dogashima on the west coast.

There are a number of excellent beaches all around the peninsula and there are some very laid back spots in summer.
