Some of Japan’s best surfing
Parts of Shikoku’s southeast coast have built themselves a big reputation as one of Japan’s top surfing destinations - in particular, the area around the Tokushima / Kōchi prefectural border.
In Tokushima, Kaifu and Shishikui have a couple of surf shops such as Pavilion Surf & Lodge, while on the Kōchi side of the border, Ikumi village is well set up with hotels and minshuku just back from the beach, and the best waves right out front.
Rental boards and lessons are available.
While there are locals surfing much of the year, once summer holidays roll around expect lots of surfers and hangers-on to show up from all over Japan.
